Search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) are to components of the same strategic plan that good Internet marketers use to position their webpages at the top of the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Some people consider it SEO vs SEM, but both of these need to work hand-in-hand.  In fact, there are many activities that some consider to fall outside of these two components of search marketing.  One component that falls within both SEO and SEM is keyword research.

Keyword research is vital to an effective search marketing strategy.  There are many tools that claim to be the "goods" for keyword analysis. Identifying what your unique selling proposition (USP) is key to keyword analysis, and then you must be able to identify the keyword phrases that your potential customers use to search for your niche.

Remember to be found in a search engine by your customers, you need to think like your customers, after that you will need to utilize keyword phrases on your site that your customers will type into the search engine.

An important concept to recognize is when doing keyword analysis is to not just utilize internal (or in-house) phrases. If your potential customers don't know your in-house terms, then they will not be searching for those in-house terms in the search engines. Your potential customers will only search by the terms that they associate with your products.

So tying your USP to customer lingo will not provide relevant search engine results, but will qualify customers in the process.
